IN A CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS, SOMETHING AS MUNDANE AS A
storm isn't usually reason to shut down or even slow down. New Yorkers and New
Jerseyites are known for being tenacious and unstoppable. So when the news
broke about impending Hurricane Sandy, it was still business as usual for many
store owners and their clients. Having dealt with a city shutdown that amounted to
a whole lot of nothing with Hurricane Irene the previous year, most New Yorkers,
and those in surrounding areas, assumed that Hurricane Sandy would be more of
the same. Unfortunately, they were wrong. Hurricane Sandy hit with a vengeance,
causing extensive damage and hardship for businesses and residents alike, including
those working in the beauty industry. From beauty supplies to online entities, no
one escaped the fallout of this hard-hitting disaster. Many businesses were closed
for days or even weeks, and online retailers had to deal with shipping slowdowns
and limited Internet service. Weeks after the initial disaster, Beauty Store Business
caught up with some of those business owners to see how they've fared in the
wake of the havoc wrought by the storm.
