He was one-of-a-kind. Rick Norvell For almost three decades Rick Norvell has provided salons and spas with peerless technology, products and training, putting to use his dual degrees in industrial technology and education from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. The result—a consistently successful consumer sunless-tanning experience—has helped make sunless the fastest growing sector in the beauty industry. He's the recipient of the prestigious 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from the trade publication Island Sun Times, an honor that is voted on by all the salons in the country. For five years running under his leadership, Norvell has dominated the Industry Choice Awards with No. 1 ratings for Tanning Solution and Best Handheld Equipment bestowed by salon owners and customers. He also has been a longtime Indoor Tanning Association board director. Growing up in Alexandria, Tennessee— which is home to Norvell's 60,000-square-foot facility—Rick was fascinated by ingredients from an early age. By the time he reached high school, his homemade body lotions had become extremely popular. Eventually, he joined his mother in establishing what would become Body Drench. The Norvell family eventually sold Body Drench to focus on sunless tanning, which had become their collective passion. With Rick's feel for ingredients and formulations and his keen understanding of skin health, Norvell was poised to break new ground. Among the company's proudest milestones are a pH-balanced prep spray for use before color application, a rehydrating finishing spray that replenishes moisture and minimizes odor and a formula that allows the client to shower just one hour after tanning. Rick creates every new formulation and blends the products himself. Working closely with his mother, his brother Greg as CFO and his wife Stacie as creative director, he is proud to maintain a family atmosphere where many employees have been with the company since day one. 72 November 2013 | beautystorebusiness.com ■ Shelley Moench-Kelly is managing editor of Beauty Store Business.
