NY NOW, which kicked off Aug. 17 and ran through Aug. 21, was held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Pier 94 in New York City. Presented as part of NY NOW's LIFESTYLE Collection, the Personal Care + Wellness section spotlighted approximately 100 innovative companies. Together they offered a mix of color cosmetics, perfumes, and bath and body care, as well as beauty accessories, natural/ organic products, hair care and collections that focus on well-being. Positive accolades, from both buyers and exhibitors, have poured in following the much-anticipated debut. The premiere edition, the culmination of a multiyear reorganization and rebranding, featured a dynamic new exhibit floor layout and vibrant new graphics. "New York's market has reached a new pinnacle with the successful reorganization and rebranding of NY NOW," says Christian Falkenberg, NY NOW director and GLM senior vice president. "The energy was palpable among both buyers and suppliers." Although the last few years have brought forth many economic challenges, optimism certainly abounds. According to Pam Danziger, president of boutique marketing consulting firm Unity Marketing, gift, novelty and souvenir stores yielded an increase of 15.2% in sales from January 2012 through May 2012. That's great news for the wholesalers who are currently looking to stock retail shelves for future spending sprees. As a result, gift stores outpaced online retailers, which grew a more modest 12.9%. The winter 2014 edition of NY NOW— the Market for Home & Lifestyle will take place Feb. 1-6. The edition includes an additional weekday for the event, and will take place at multiple locations: the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Piers. The extra day (Feb. 6) is projected to ease concerns surrounding the show's overlap with Super Bowl XLVIII and its potential to impact show attendance over the celebratory weekend. Show organizers are expecting about 35,000 attendees, including those from more than 80 countries, to be in attendance exploring a projected 100,000 products in more than 400 product categories that are expected to exhibit across the event's HOME, LIFESTYLE, HANDMADE and NEW! collections.
