88 January 2016 | beautystorebusiness.com The Barczaks work around the clock and have a very unique relationship with their clients. Not only are they the business owners, but they are also the practitioners. When you become a client at California Cosmetics, you immediately get Dr. Barczak and Lea's personal cell phone numbers to contact them during any point of the day and night. The cou- ple is adamant that their clients feel safe and secure prior to and post treatment. "If you ask any one of our patients, they know they could come in here at anytime, ask any questions and call or text us," Lea Barczak says. "That gives them peace of mind because when we go do these types of procedures, there's bruising, there's swelling, and it's very intimidating especially if you've never done anything before. So giving that person an immediate answer [to any questions or concerns] is important." MEET THE BARCZAKS Dr. Jeff Barczak developed an interest for cosmetic procedures while completing his residency training in anesthesiology. "During this time, he had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of physi- cians who performed cosmetic procedures in the operating room like plastics and reconstructive, oculoplastics, dermatology and vascular surgery," Lea Barczak says. "Upon moving to California in 2011, Jeff worked as a medical director for a medspa in Orange County, where he gained a foun- dation of knowledge regarding minimally invasive cosmetic procedures." He is fellowship-trained in cardiothoracic anesthesiology and provided anesthesia services for the open-heart team. Jeff was unhappy in this field for several reasons. "As an anesthesiologist, you never have your own patients and you never see the same patient twice," Dr. Jeff Barczak says. "You miss out on connecting with people and developing long-term relationships. In anesthesiology, your patients are often asleep and seldom even remember your name." "Leaving anesthesiology for this industry was the best decision I've made for my career. I now own my own business instead of working for someone else. I get to spend time with my family, and this practice allows me to develop long-lasting relationships with my patients," he says. "It has been worth it. I enjoy the challenges that come with being a business owner, and I am much happier with my life in this industry." As an anesthesiologist with exten- sive experience, Dr. Barczak has something that many practitioners performing non-permanent procedures lack: needle experience. He has a way with needles and therefore makes the experience for his client a gentle and positive one— as procedures such as JUVEDERM are often done after numbing gel is placed on the lips and can be painful. California Cosmetics gives its clients a dental block before doing any filler, so that the client feels virtually no pain. Lea Barczak became an esthetician in 2004, and started working at a dermatol- ogy center in Palm Springs, California. "There, I became a medical estheti- cian and gained a lot of hands-on training in the world of aesthetic medicine," Lea says. "I was then offered a position as an outside sales consultant with one of the skincare lines that we carried in the office. I loved working in the field because I was able to see and work with so many amazing spas, salons, medspas, resorts and plastic-surgery centers. After working alongside many talented aesthetic nurses, I realized that it was my calling." After working in their respected fields, Jeff and Lea opened California Cosmetics in June 2015, and its social media following and client satisfaction has created a lot of buzz in the area and Internet. Lea says that being married and working together has been a bonding experience that many couples don't get to have. "Our passions, talents and skills to- gether can achieve a lot of things—more than we could individually," she says. "Opening this business has been a dream of Lea and I for several years," Dr. Barczak says. "With the rise in social acceptance and popularity of non- invasive or minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, as well as economic recov- ery in the United States following the global financial crisis of the late 2000s, it seemed like the perfect opportunity." THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY Non-permanent procedures have be- come the fastest-growing trend in the beauty industry. "These procedures are safe, affordable, offered by a wide range of facilities and practitioners, have become more socially accepted; and in most cases have very low cosmetic risk and are reversible— Jeffrey Barczak D.O. Medical Director Lea Barczak LVN and esthetician "We want to open two more locations in 2016, one in the Los Angeles area and one in Orange County."
