40 May 2016 | beautystorebusiness.com Skincare Spotlight MYTH #5: Products with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) are enough to protect the skin from sun damage. Many believe that by wearing a high-SPF product (in particular one with an SPF above 20) and reapplying it regularly, you will be completely safe from UV-induced sun damage—whether from UVA or UVB rays. THE TRUTH: You need antioxidants to fully protect your skin, too. SPF terminology is primarily a measure of UVB protection, and does not apply to UVA rays. Furthermore, most ingredients used in SPF products available in the U.S. do not protect skin from the entire UV spectrum. SPF filters work in one of two ways: they either absorb UVAs (320–400 nm) and UVBs (290–320 nm), or they reflect these nefarious rays. The more popular metallic ingredients, such as zinc or titanium, are examples of ingredients that facilitate the reflection of light. Zinc protects from rays ranging from 290–380 nm, whereas titanium protects from rays ranging from 290–340 nm. Neither protect from the 380–400 nm range (in other words, UVA rays). The solution: Always complement SPF protection (which, to be clear, is absolutely essential) with antioxidant protection. Indeed, antioxidants such as green tea effectively neutralize the free radicals that are created due to incomplete reflection or absorption of nefarious UV rays. Antioxidants are the skin's second line of defense, and when combined with SPF products, enable the most effective sun protection. Always recommend to your clients that they apply an antioxidant product underneath their SPF product. Even if the SPF is over 50, the product needs to be reapplied regularly—and switching from SPF 25 to SPF 50 does not mean that you are safe in the sun for twice as long. MYTH #6: There are creams that are as effective as getting Botox injections. This is one of my favorite myths because the very appealing "better than Botox" marketing campaigns of various compa- nies claim that their topical creams have comparable, if not better, results than botulinum toxin treatments. THE TRUTH: No topical product on the market can work like the botulinum toxin. This is because it is not administered in the same fashion—a topical product will not penetrate into the muscle. It is important to note that the focus of this argument is not so much about the ingre- dients as it is about the method of the application. A cream containing the botu- linum toxin would not work either because it would be applied topically rather than injected directly into the muscle.
