They really are a great product; and unlike the uniforms, they have quickly become an entity of their own, a brand of their own." The popular Milan Tunic also remains as one of the company's best sellers. "It was my first design, even way back when it was manufactured in white linen," she says. "It's a beautiful, stylish tunic that is timeless, versatile and looks great on all body shapes." STEP 5: Once successful at home, test your business model in other markets. McDermott started her company in Aus- tralia, but hopes to soon achieve the same level of success in both the United Kingdom and the United States. "Regard- ing Blackpants Workwear, our ultimate plan is to replicate our business model in both the United Kingdom and the United States, slowly growing our customer base within the hair and beauty industry. We are also taking The Intelligent Legging to the general market, through retail, which is exciting," she says. In the meantime, McDermott is stay- ing very busy and plans to work the trade-show circuit for the next few years to continue to promote and spread the word about her leggings in different parts of the country and overseas. As for more launches, fans of the brand can expect new designs from her team as well. "Watch out for more excit- ing designs and projects, I have a few ideas up my sleeve!" she says. STEP 6: Do what you love, love what you do. McDermott combined several of her interests and skills to create a burgeon- ing business. "When we first started the company, we built the brand on the notion 'look great, feel great,'" McDermott says. "We supplied the industry with stylish designs that women actually love wear- ing, unlike traditional uniform designs. To this day, when we see someone walk out of the changing room, [we] can see it in [her] face, just how amazing [she] feels wearing them.
