52 August 2016 | beautystorebusiness.com Taking this concept and running with it, Birchby created Bare Republic, a line exclusively available at Target that launched in May 2015. The line started with five cruelty-free SPF min- eral sunscreens formulated with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and plant-derived antioxidants to help skin shield against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Bare Repub- lics water-resistant products are free of chemical actives and contain no parabens or retinyl-palmitate. Since its debut a little more than a year ago, the brand has added three new SKUs, "with our first foray into after-sun care for Bare Republic," Birchby says. In March 2016, the five-time MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy soccer team even proclaimed Bare Republic its official suncare brand. With the company expanding, Bare Republic needed a new office, which came in the form of a 44,000-square-foot workplace in Carlsbad, California. "The space is a light-drenched modern build- ing filled with floor-to-ceiling windows, contemporary art, stand-up ergonomic desks, surfboards and our four-legged, tail-wagging employees," he says. "San- dals and short sleeves are the norm, but buttoned up shirts are also welcome anytime. We have an open-office floor plan, which offers a fantastic environment for collaboration and team building, which we didn't have before." WITH DESIGN IN MIND With its sleek and brightly colored pack- aging, it's no surprise that someone with an eye for design created COOLA's rec- ognizable look. "It is not widely known that I actually went to school for art—so it is something that is near and dear to my heart," Birchby explains. "As such, we treat all our products and assets like pieces of art. Everyone at COOLA has a passion for design—something that hopefully shows through all things COOLA. Our new office is perfect to showcase our art collection—hopefully, inspiring staff and adding a little extra passion to their work." COOLA's beautiful packaging even caught the attention of another big brand, Tommy Bahama, who approached the company about designing a "suncare collection and assortment that spoke to its demographic and loyal clientele," he says. After collaborating together, he calls the Tommy Bahama suncare line "simple yet stunning,"—of course, integrating his knack for high-quality for- mulas and fresh scents into the process. SPREADING THE WEALTH Birchby received another honor recently when ICMAD (Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers and Distributors) asked him to be a keynote speaker. "Being chosen as a keynote speaker was a great honor. I love to tell our story; and to have others want to hear and, hopefully, learn from it is incredibly flattering! I think every opportunity to share and broaden our story offers us an opportunity to learn and grow as well," he says. He also encourages other entrepre- neurs to join ICMAD because it has been "a great association to be involved with," Birchby says. "To be honest, I wish I used them even more at the beginning of start- ing COOLA, as it would have helped us bypass some very hard learning lessons. Live and learn, as they say!" "Honestly, I cannot think of a better industry to be a part of. The beauty/skincare industry is filled with such passionate and caring people who love to make other people's lives better. Our products are all about the senses—touch, feel, look, smell—and I love making products that make people feel great. I enjoy push- ing the envelope of developing products to enhance well-being, and [keep people] healthy and protected." ■ Karen Wilhelmsen is a writer and editor based in Orange County, CA.
