Here, we delve deeper into how he created and grew his company over the last decade to become one of the biggest brands in the beauty industry. MAKING A SPLASH You can trace Birchby's love of the great outdoors back to childhood. "Being active has always been a part of my life, from a young age. Eating well, exercising and taking care of my skin and health really took root when I was living in Venice Beach, California—[where] I was exposed to eating and living a lifestyle geared toward wellness, inside and out," he says. As a kid, Birchby spent summers outdoors in the sun all day, surfing and windsurf- ing the ocean's waves. "With a family sunscreen drawer comprised of SPF 4s and 8s, sunburns were commonplace," he says. Though Birchby always knew wearing sunscreen was important, it wasn't until he learned some shocking news that he realized just how vital it was to a healthy lifestyle. "It was not until 2002 when both my parents were diagnosed with melanoma that I began investigating proper sun protection and became motivated to create something better than [what] was available. Inspired by the organic lifestyle of living in California, I dove headfirst into sun science and organic skincare formulation research.
