104 August 2016 | CEO Spotlight A Splash of Glitter Christy Rose, Creator and Co-Owner of KBShimmer by Breanna Armstrong Images courtesy of KBShimmer CHRISTY ROSE IS THE CREATOR AND CO-OWNER of KBShimmer a cosmetics company that produces bold nail polishes, body-care products and unique accessories for manicures and pedicures. Rose left her day job in real estate to pursue her passion for craft- ing beautiful things that has now become a popular nail-polish brand. How did you develop the idea for your company? KBShimmer was born out of a love for pampering, vibrant colors and rich scents. It started with a gift of handmade soap, and the desire to have a creative outlet to come home to after an unfulfilling day at work. The desire to have some extra income led to vending at craft shows and online. What did you do before starting KBShimmer? Before KBShimmer, I worked in the real estate industry assisting a busy agent by listing houses, creating mar- keting materials and assisting with client communication. When did you launch your company? We started with handmade soaps and bath bombs in 2008. Just four years later, when supplies for creating nail polish were just being made available to the public, we added glittery polish to our line of body care. With a deep love of pedicures and glitter, creating nail polish was a logical next step in growing KBShimmer. It was around the same time that job loss allowed KBShimmer to become my fulltime focus, and soon my husband came on full time with the company. The desire for our polish grew quickly and we now have three additional employees to help provide KBShimmer all over the world! What has been your biggest challenge as a business owner? I think the biggest challenge that we have faced is learning how and when to scale up. There were many tipping points for us, moving into a larger production area, hiring employees and purchasing larger pieces of equipment to increase production. Each of those was very scary moments for a small business, but each allowed us to become a stronger company. What is a career highlight of yours? Being in an Ipsy bag! It was such an honor to be selected to be in Ipsy, they always have such top-notch brands—it was a huge boost for our company to be among industry leaders. Would you ever give a celebrity a manicure? Well, I would have to be licensed, but yes that would be so fun. I would be nervous about what to say, but I am confident they would love the KBShimmer colors and how easy it is to use our polish, such as our "crellys" … it's nail art in a bottle. If you could work with anyone, who would it be and why? Katy Perry! She has such a fun and colorful persona and her nails are always fantastic. I think it would be so great to work with her to create a glittery polish line. What is a typical day like for you? Most days I start out with checking my email and social media. Social media is a huge part of our business, as interacting with fans and customers is so important for KBShimmer. I also check stock on the website to see what needs to be produced and set our production schedule. On days where production is not needed, I may work on new product creation, take time for business classes, or fit in a workout. What do you do on your spare time? I am a huge reader. I love to get lost in a mystery or caught up in a love story—on most days you will not find me far from my Kindle. What are your future goals for your company? One of our huge future goals is just now being put into place. We really want to get our polish in the hands "It started with a gift of handmade soap, and the desire to have a creative outlet to come home to after an unfulfilling day at work." In our new "CEO Spotlight," we feature stand-out brand owners in the beauty industry.
