Legislation that would deregulate the cosmetology industry has already been introduced across the U.S. If deregulation becomes a reality, the industry as a whole would be impacted-from stylists and salon owners to distributors and manufacturers of professional salon products. Industry standards would plummet. Consumers would ultimately run the greatest risk. They would be completely exposed to those individuals who would practice cosmetology without the proper training and license. Deregulation would also mean the potential threat of disease, since stylist/salon owners would not be required to sanitize equipment. There would be no one to report violations to, and no safety codes to uphold. With more than 800 members and counting, the I Am Movement hopes to continue educating stylists, manufacturers, distributors, salon owners, consumers, and law makers. Joining is free for all licensed professionals and is as quick and easy as filling out a form online. PBA will send each member a free window cling to display in his or her work space and talking points to start the conversation with their client. In addition, PBA is calling on all industry manufacturers and distributors to discuss the importance of industry regulation with their salons and urge them to join the I Am Movement to support efforts to bring consumers and lawmakers into the conversation. Completing proper schooling, state testing and obtaining a license is a point of pride. It demonstrates a sense of responsibility and is the ultimate display of commitment to the beauty industry.
