78 April 2014 | beautystorebusiness.com News MALIBU C, U.S. MASTERS SWIMMING PARTNER TO SUPPORT, ENCOURAGE SWIMMERS Malibu C is partnering with U.S. Masters Swimming, the national governing body for adult swimming. The multiyear agreement provides Malibu C marketing, licensing and promotional rights in the personal-care products category. "U.S. Masters Swimming is the right cultural and demographic fit for us," says Tom Porter, Malibu C's founder and president. "Malibu C has been dedicated to swimmers for almost three decades. As a pioneer of products for water-related issues of the hair, scalp and skin, Malibu C is the leader in research on how elements in water—including chlorine, calcium, copper, and other minerals— affect the external body." Rob Butcher, Masters Swimming's executive director, adds, "Malibu C's gentle, eco-conscious line of personal-care products meets the needs of our diverse membership base of both competitive and fitness swimmers—whether they swim daily or once a week. Just as beneficial is Malibu C's support in promoting our Swimming Saves Lives Foundation—which provides grants to programs that are offering adult learn-to-swim lessons—to its network of salons and retail partners." Malibu C is the No. 1 salon hair care and skin care for swimmers with products that are 100% vegan and formulated without sodium thiosulfate and other potentially harsh ingredients. RETAILERS ORGANIZE TO PROTECT CONSUMER DATA The National Retail Federation has banded together with retailers to urge the implementation of more secure consumer-payment options—particularly, the replacement of current credit and debit cards with cards that would store data in an embedded computer microchip and require the use of a PIN rather than a signature. Recently, the NRF sent a letter to congressional leaders outlining the retail industry's commitment to protecting sensitive consumer data in the wake of the recent international cyber attacks and thefts. It reiterated the retail industry's long-held support for replacing current payment cards with more advanced technology. Current cards use easy-to-hack 1960s technology. "The National Retail Federation and our 12,000 members are committed to combating this criminal threat to our industry and our customers, and we strongly recommend the adoption of meaningful steps to fight cyber theft and credit card fraud," NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay wrote in the letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. "For years, banks have continued to issue fraud-prone magnetic stripe cards to U.S. customers, putting sensitive financial information at risk while simultaneously touting the security benefits of next-generation PIN and chip card technology for customers in Europe and dozens of other markets," Shay said. "The retail industry is eager to work with banks and card companies to fight cyber attacks and reduce fraud," Shay stated. "These efforts include installation of sophisticated new PIN-enabled point-of-sale systems and readiness to adopt cards with more secure microchip technology, but the fact remains that retailers cannot do this alone." The NRF expressed its support for an immediate transition from magnetic-stripe cards to more secure and advanced PIN and chip cards to better protect consumer data from theft, hacking and skimming. PIN and chip cards are widely used in more than 80 countries throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. ISSE 2014 DRAWS NEARLY 40,000 BEAUTY PROS The International Salon and Spa Expo 2014 in Long Beach, California, this past January drew "an energetic crowd of nearly 40,000 beauty professionals from around the world," report Professional Beauty Association offi cials. The PBA produces the trade show. This year's version, they add, welcomed more than 350 beauty brands. On-site sales and reservations for 2015 exhibit space exceeded expectations. ISSE also featured more than 150 complimentary education sessions. The PBA and ISSE hosted for the fi rst time Major League Barber's Hot Hands Barber Brawl competitions. Many companies launched new and/or expanded booths at the 2014 show. Winning booths of various types at ISSE 2014 were Neuma, Aveda and Cailyn Cosmetics. Next year's ISSE will take place Jan. 24-26.
