Editor's Note Gear Up for 2013's Hope Is In Style Marc Birenbaum Executive Editor mbirenbaum@creativeage.com Wouldn't it be great to see beauty retailers creating special "blue products" sections next November? 4 June 2013 | beautystorebusiness.com AS A TYPE 2 DIABETIC ON "DIET, exercise and pills" who has worked for a long time covering the salon industry, it's truly exciting to offer you this issue's cover story on the yearlong Hope Is In Style campaign to raise industry awareness and funds to fight diabetes by Reuben Carranza, CEO of Wella, the Salon Professional Division of P&G;, North America, and the 2013 City of Hope Spirit of Life Award honoree. Check out "A Fresh Approach to the Spirit of Life Award" by Liz Barrett on page 50. Carranza—who doesn't have diabetes but has family members who do—is the second consecutive salon-industry City of Hope Spirit of Life Award honoree to choose diabetes as his cause. He launched his unique campaign at America's Beauty Show 2013 in Chicago this past March, where nearly 100 VIPs gathered at a special event to hear him and Britta Bucholz, senior director of development at the City of Hope, talk about how diabetes affects our industry and the details of Hope Is In Style. The campaign's gala event is the evening of July 13 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. I hope to see you there. What's really interesting to me, however, is the platform to educate beauty professionals and consumers about diabetes, as well as continuing the awareness and fund-raising through November, Diabetes Awareness Month. Read "How Beauty Stores Can Get Involved" on page 54. As Carranza suggests, wouldn't it be great to see beauty retailers creating special "blue products" sections next November similar to the "pink products" sections during Breast Cancer Awareness Month? I'm not sure if you know this, but there are many resources on diabetes and other diseases at the City of Hope website (cityofhope.org). Also, did you know that numerous breakthrough drugs for diabetes—including synthetic human insulin that's used by millions of diabetics every day—and cancer are based on technology pioneered by the City of Hope researchers? And the City of Hope can provide consultations, second opinions and treatment for anyone, no matter where they live. (Contact Kathleen P. Talbot, director of development, at the City of Hope, 213.241.7192, kptalbot@coh.org.) Of course, diabetes is personal for me. My mom and older brother were both Type 2 insulin-dependent diabetics. My mom died in her late 40s after having one of her legs amputated above the knee. My brother passed away this past February after a high-risk heart operation at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, my hometown. Currently, about 8% of the U.S. population is affected by diabetes. Who doesn't know someone who is a diabetic? I urge you to participate in Carranza's Hope Is In Style.
