I n the beauty industry, makeup provides more than just a cosmetic lift to profits. Consumers spent four out of every five dollars on makeup products in the prestige beaut y sector alone — which reached $17 billion in sales last year—according to a report from NPD Group, a market research company based in Port Washing- ton, New York. While cosmetic staples such as mascara and eyeshadow continue to dominate sales, makeup tools and accessories also play an important role for consumers. Thanks to popular online tutorials from today's beauty influenc- ers, savvy customers know that creating a flawless look relies as much on the application technique as on choosing the perfect shades. "Brushes have become more than an aside to makeup," says Jacqueline Mink Cooper, executive director of retail and cosmetic sales for FM Brush Company, based in Glendale, New York. "As manufacturers, we are cogni- zant to create quality brushes that will work, that will make application easier and that will give the consumer more creativity. Consumers are hungry for it." The abundance of beauty-centric creativity and education available on social media has inspired makeup brush manufacturers, too. Cooper says, "There is so much innovation on the market today. Advancements in synthetic material as well as innovation in shapes have given consumers more options than ever before." To help tout the benefits of high-quality makeup tools to customers, suppliers can offer valuable talking points to staff members. "Some of our vendors look to us to visit their stores to educate their staff on why our brushes work," she says. "We explain how a brush is handmade, and they have a whole new appreciation for the process." To make shopping a fun experience for customers while boosting revenue, here are the hot hues and professional tools they'll love. —Ann Carlson
