70 June 2017 | beautystorebusiness.com Executive Spotlight naturally as we were familiar with them and they us. What do you look for in an employee? The most important thing is if someone is a self-starter. We look for people who are eager to learn but also are willing to take the reins on a project, if needed. I don't always have time to manage everyone, so I really trust our employees to make the best decision to get the job done. What is a typical day like for you? I wake up around 5:30 a.m. and answer a few emails and make my to-do list for the day. I take my boys to school and spend the rest of the day in the office. I usually start with our production team to make sure we are on schedule, but any day will prob- ably include working on new opportunities, checking on existing customers, working with our chemist on new products, looking at financials, making forecasts, merchan- dising our store, writing text and updating marketing materials. I get home from the office and it's homework time, and I try to cook dinner during the week so we can sit down together as a family. Who inspires you? My father. He started his own business and now that I am doing it too, I finally grasp his struggles and the sacrifices he made. It is not for the faint of heart! What are three things you have with you at all times? Our rice milk Hand Remedy, our aluminum- free Deodorant Swipes and lip gloss. How does social media influence your company? I love social media for branding purposes. It gives us a voice and a way to communicate with our customers like never before. It is incredible to be able to engage directly with our customer, and see the reaction— what works and what doesn't. What advice can you offer to entrepreneurs looking to start their own business? Don't give up. There are a lot of ups and downs; you will have amazing days and horrible days, but remember why you started in the first place and stick with it. What retailers are you currently in? Our main brand partners are Nordstrom, Massage Envy and many luxury spas, resorts and boutiques. Would you like to have your product in more retailers? Yes, we are always looking to expand our reach. What's the best compliment you've ever received? The best compliment by far is that I am a good mom to my boys. ■ Breanna Armstrong is a freelance writer and editor in Orange County, CA.
