60 July 2016 | beautystorebusiness.com Skincare Spotlight In this legislative effort, the United States, in effect, followed Europe's lead. Indeed, Cosmetics Europe, which repre- sents European companies and associa- tions in the cosmetics and personal-care industry, recommended in October 2015 that its members discontinue the use of microbeads in wash-off cosmetics and personal-care products for exfoliating and cleansing purposes, effective 2020. A proposed alternative to microbeads, as suggested by some in the industry, include jojoba esters. Jojoba beads act in a way similar to microbeads and are considered less likely to harm the envi- ronment. However, some experts say that these ingredients often cost more or have a more problematic supply chain. A FEW FAVORITE EXFOLIATORS While listing all exfoliating products is impossible, below are a selection of popular ones, both mass and prestige, both chemical and physical (listed in alphabetical order): Alchimie Forever Gentle Refining Scrub This is a dual-action exfoliator with both physical-exfoliation ingredients (jojoba esters and cranberry beads) and papaya enzyme (papain) for chemical exfoliation. The idea is that the physical-exfoliating ingredients help to loosen dead skin cells, making it easier for the enzyme to dissolve them. Boots Botanics Microdermabrasion Polish Age Defense From a United Kingdom brand, this super- fine mechanical polish is made of pumice to buff away rough, dull skin quickly. Dermalogica Microfoliant This cult product has a rice-based powder formula that activates upon contact with water, releasing papain, salicylic acid and rice enzymes that micro-exfoliate dead cells, instantly leaving skin smoother and brighter. This is an example of a chemical at-home exfoliating product. Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant Similar to the Boots Botanics Microderm- abrasion Polish Age Defense, this product aims to mimic the effect of microdermabra- sion. However, it combines some acids in the formulation, creating a dual-exfoliation system: It contains both aluminum-oxide crystals and lactic acid. Kate Somerville Exfolikate This popular product contains fruit enyzmes from papaya, pineapple and pumpkin, as well as lactic acid. This is a great example of a chemical at-home exfoliating product. Sonic Cleansing Brushes While this is not a wash-off product, sonic cleansing and the leading brand, Clarisonic, should not be forgotten during an exfoliation discussion. Indeed, sonic cleansing is a form of physical exfoliation: Sonic frequency of more than hundreds of movements per sec- ond work to exfoliate the skin mechanically. St. Ives Apricot Scrub This brand markets itself to be America's No. 1 scrub brand; and this award-winning Apricot Scrub is a physical exfoliator containing apricot shells, corn kernel meal and walnut extracts. ■ Ada S.
