40 June 2016 | beautystorebusiness.com A LITTLE SOMETHING SPECIAL ARTIST: Brittany Turpen, Special-effects Makeup Artist (MUA) Instagram: @beeteee Website: brittanyturpen.com In todayÕs world working as a professional freelance makeup artist is a mobile business in itself. But honing in on HollywoodÕs elite special-effects marketÑnow thatÕs an art. Just ask professional MUA Brittany Turpen, whose freelance business thrives on her specialty in both beauty and special- effects makeup. TurpenÕs had a passion for stage makeup ever since high school, where she was in charge of her theater depart- mentÕs hair and makeup. She never believed her love for makeup would turn into a career. ÒMy love for makeup didnÕt turn into a career until a few years into college,Ó she says. ÒIt was from day one of [a] stage makeup class that I knew that this was my career. ItÕs a very tough decision to become a makeup artist. But I just knew that this was for me. So I started researching schools and moved to New York soon after that.Ó She wound up at the Make Up For Ever Academy in New York City, where she studied the ins and outs of the business before return- ing to the land of film. Although TurpenÕs business encom- passes both standard makeup services and special-effects makeup, itÕs the latter that opens doors of opportunity. ÒThere are so many different jobs available in this industry,Ó she says. However, Turpen has learned that it isnÕt easy, and certainly not for the faint of heart. ÒSpecial-effects [makeup] is a lot of work. I have seen my makeup kit turn from lipstick and brushes to chemicals and power tools. ItÕs not just applying the makeup, there is so much more that goes into making them.Ó One of the unique challenges of the industry is that few understand it, Turpen says. But, if you enter into it with a good attitude, it can add to the thrill of the job. ÒSpecial-effects [makeup] takes time, layers and patience, and thatÕs something that most people donÕt understand,Ó she explains. ÒAt first, it looks like a mess, and Brittany Turpen "[Special-effects makeup] is hard. It's time-consuming. It's messy. But if you're into it, it might be the most fulfilling job." – Brittany Turpen, Professional MUA EXPERT TIP: When you're a freelancer, logistics can mean the difference between a business that keeps your head above water and one that never gets off the ground. For Turpen, a few simple programs ensure she is always professional and efficient. "I mark everything down in the calendar app in my phone—it's boring but it's true. I will set alerts to remind me, and I always send out a text to my client to make sure that we are on the same page as far as date and time," she says. When it comes to payment, she relies on apps such as PayPal and Venmo. "And I love Squarespace for hosting my website. It is clean, easy to use and customizable."
