66 May 2016 | beautystorebusiness.com leading salon megabrands—Wella and OPI. Both Wella and OPI are iconic lead- ers in the salon channel with a fully complementary portfolio and passion- ate, expert organizations eager to win in our industry. We are both fueled by inno- vation, education and creativity and the desire to delight our salon professional partners. I am excited about our great future together, creating the best salon professional company in the world." Salvatore "Sal" Mauceri, Wella North America CEO, added, "Coty's choice of Sylvie as leader of Professional Beauty is great news for all of us at Wella. Sylvie's deep salon experience makes her a great leader for the future organization. Her passion for Wella, its people and the salon industry is well-known in North America. I couldn't be happier with the decision." In her career, Moreau has held a variety of positions in local, regional and international roles, managing many iconic brands. She has spent the past seven years in P&G;'s Salon Professional division, where she was instrumental in the business turnaround. Moreau will remain based in Geneva, Switzerland, following the close of the merger. Wella and OPI will continue to oper- ate as separate businesses, parts of P&G; and Coty, respectively, until the close of the transaction. WHO IS MAUCERI? Coty confirmed Feb. 1 that it had made an internal announcement about the leadership structure of the new Coty post-merger: The future regional senior vice president of North America Profes- sional Beauty and Global OPI in the future Coty Professional Beauty Division [the salon professional and hair color and styl- ing businesses] will be Mauceri, currently the leader of Wella North America. (See the Beauty Store Business cover and cover story with him, October 2014.) In the announcement, Coty cited Mau- ceri's impressive track record leading complex organizations in North America and abroad, as well as his successful stint as an entrepreneur as central to Coty's appointment. Coty went on to say that his diverse background and experience, and more recently, his success leading Wella North America made him an ideal fit for this important future role. In response to Mauceri's confirma- tion as regional senior vice president of North America Professional Beauty and Global OPI in the future Coty Profes- sional Beauty, Moreau said, "Sal has an incredible ability to lead large and complicated businesses to explosive growth while creating high-performing organizations along the way. He has demonstrated significant success in all his roles within P&G; Wella." Toronto-born and a citizen of the United States, Mauceri is a 25-year veteran with extensive sales, market- ing and general management experi- ence in both business-to-business and consumer products. Mauceri kicked off his career at a leading consumer health care products company and then started a successful medical supply business, which he managed for a number of years and later divested. He joined P&G;, Wella Professionals in 2005. In his current role, Mauceri oversees the entire organization of professional educators, sales executives, marketers, researchers and support functions of Wella North America. "After leading the U.S. sales orga- nization and later the North America integration of Wella into P&G;, Sal worked from our Geneva headquar- ters to transform 90 countries across three regions into what has become our global emerging markets business and an important growth engine for Wella globally," Moreau noted. "He returned to the United States two years ago as head of Wella North America, where he has transitioned this very important business to explosive growth while evolving as an important industry influencer." Mauceri commented, "I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to take on an expanded role in the future Coty Pro- fessional Beauty Division. Wella North America has established a fantastic growth track record, and OPI is the most exciting brand in the professional nail industry globally." WHO IS ANDERSKOW? OPI Products announced Dec. 1, 2015, the appointment of Ron Anderskow as global general manager of OPI (opi.com). Anderskow is overseeing the day-to-day operations of the brand, which is currently available in more than 100 countries. Anderskow joined Coty after success- ful international and domestic general management and sales leadership roles in the beauty, oral care and professional divisions at P&G; for nearly 30 years. Most recently, Anderskow served as senior vice president of sales for Wella North America, where he led the multi- functional customer business development organization and reinvented the Go To Market organizational structure to bet- ter serve the salon professional industry across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Under his leadership the busi- ness experienced unprecedented growth and became the best-performing region in global Wella Salon Professional in just 18 months. Prior to that role, Anderskow worked in Geneva, leading the Global Wella Sales Organization. "The professional industry leads the beauty business in innovation, speed to market, and customer relationships," explained Anderskow. "Leading OPI, the world's No. 1 professional nail brand, across the global marketplace is an exciting challenge for me. I am extremely happy to join the OPI and Coty leader- ship team, and to help create the new beauty powerhouse." Anderskow is known for merging big- business discipline with entrepreneurial passion to create dramatic sales and profit growth for his customers, while delivering inspirational leadership to his organization. Another note about OPI: In late Janu- ary, there were numerous news reports quoting a Coty statement that OPI is mov- ing its North Hollywood, California-based operations—where it has been since 1981—throughout the year to Sanford, North Carolina, where Coty has its larg- est U.S. plant. North Carolina officials announced Jan. 21 that Coty will expand its manufacturing facility there and that Coty plans to invest about $19 million at the site during the next three years. OPI commercial operations—including market- ing and sales—will remain in North Hollywood, California, according to Coty. WHERE DOES THIS BIG DEAL GO FROM HERE? As first announced, the deal is expected to close in the second half of calendar year 2016 subject to regulatory clear- ances, works council consultations and other customary conditions. Coty has stated that it will pro- vide a more detailed time frame during its third-quarter fiscal 2016 earnings announcement in early May. There are still a lot of questions and details on how this will all play out. Two possible questions: Does this deal present opportunities for smaller, more nimble beauty brands? Might the new Coty might jettison certain less- profitable or not-so-great-of-a-fit beauty brands down the road? Less important but on the minds of some: Will Clairol Professional, Color Charm and the other open-line brands so important to beauty stores bring back their major distribu- tor awards and event during a future Cosmoprof North America in Las Vegas? Many—but certainly not all—questions will be answered as the transaction moves toward its scheduled close later this year. Remember: A successful com- pletion of all this is expected to double the size of Coty by revenue—and cre- ate one of the world's largest pure-play beauty companies. ■ Marc Birenbaum is the executive editor of Beauty Store Business.
