62 December 2015 | beautystorebusiness.com others. Here, your definition is probably something like "success is mentoring those just starting out in this industry" or "leav- ing the company in better shape than when I started." Definitions such as these illustrate one's desire to leave something meaningful behind. CHOOSING YOUR DEFINITION Now it's time to form your own definition of success. Give it some thought. A great deal of thought. This isn't something to take lightly and it should ebb and flow in your mind as it takes shape and becomes firmer in your thoughts. As you're driving to work, ponder what success truly means to you. As you strug- gle with the day-to-day operations of the store, consider what drives your success. When you spend time with family and friends, try to determine how success shapes who you are. And in your quiet times—with no one else around and no distractions—what is it that brings you joy and tells you that you have arrived? When all these situations form a con- fluence of thoughts, you have found your definition of success. You'll know it when you find it because you'll have that "eureka" moment where you say to yourself, "Yes, this is how I define success." Now, hang on to it. Mull it over. And pursue your definition. LIVING YOUR DEFINITION With a firm definition of success at the forefront of your thoughts, you're ready to live your life in pursuit of that endeavor. Every day you should ask your- self if you're still striving to achieve the level of success you have envisioned. Are you living, breathing, drinking, eating and sleeping your success? It's not something you can just turn off. Success is a machine that drives us. It keeps us motivated and hardens us to the challenges that present themselves. Our pursuit of success is dependent upon only our own actions. Others may support us and some may even try to detract us from our desire for success. But ultimately, it's you. You are the one who controls whether or not you attain success. Only you can be the embodiment of the level of success you have crafted. So, right now, start defining success and live your definition! ■ Dr. Steven Austin Stovall is professor of management at Wilmington College in Wilmington, OH. To create your own dream board, you will need a poster board, a glue stick and a few old magazines (even the one you are reading now). Cut out phrases and images that you would like to see in your future and glue them to your poster board. Dream boards can be an ongoing project; you do not have to create a board in one sitting. When something inspires you, add it to your board. Make sure to hang the board somewhere you can easily see it, like by your door so that the last thing you see when you leave your house are your future goals. 2) Create daily iteboard goals. Purchase a small whiteboard and write something new and inspiring on it every day. Whether it's a motivational quote or it's a goal that you want to set for yourself that day, this serves as a positive push towards success. gettyimages.com Hot Products • Smart Business Moves • Important Trends "The biggest obstacle to increased sales?
