Marc Birenbaum Executive Editor mbirenbaum@creativeage.com 4 December 2015 | beautystorebusiness.com Editor's Note Plans are for 15 new John Barrett salons in Saks stores by the end of 2017. John Barrett salons Group Partners With Saks Fifth Avenue THE SALON-IN-STORE CONCEPT HAS taken a giant step forward, which makes me wonder "when," not "if," we'll see more at all prices. Isn't a pro service inte- gral to much beauty retailing? Isn't a salon store the best beauty business model? John Barrett—legendary hairstylist, beauty industry pioneer and founder/creative director of the John Barrett salons group, marketed as "the largest collection of luxury salons in the United States"—has hooked up with Saks Fifth Avenue—part of the Hudson's Bay Co. brand portfolio that oper- ates 38 stores in 22 states, five international licensed stores and saks.com. In late September, John Barrett Hold- ings announced that it had signed a definitive agreement with Saks to be the specialty retailer's official in-store salon and spa partner in the United States and Canada. Plans are for 15 new John Barrett salons in Saks stores by the end of 2017. John Barrett has already started taking over salon and spa operations at select Saks sites and will progressively renovate existing salons and spas. "John Barrett has found a partner in Saks Fifth Avenue that shares our larger vision to connect with the client seam- lessly inside and outside the walls of the salon, at the beauty level and throughout the client's journey in the store," says Jim Hedges, John Barrett Holdings CEO. "Through our partnership with Saks we can animate the beauty experience and create opportunities for sharing our col- lective expertise, education and other engagements throughout the entire store, as well as its beauty environments." John Barrett plans to invest heavily in the infrastructure, equipment and technology for each salon, and will include new service menus, spa-treatment protocols, luxury retail offerings and plans for a new John Barrett "fast beauty" concept in the salon. Marc Metrick, Saks Fifth Avenue presi- dent, adds, "We are focused on quality and luxury in everything that we do, and John Barrett's expert services give our custom- ers just that. We know John Barrett's offering will be yet one more reason for our customers to shop at Saks." John Barrett Holdings will operate John Barrett salons in Saks stores. Tricarico Architecture and Design will lead salon design and renovations. Staff personally chosen and trained by John Barrett will run all new locations. The strategic rollout of the salons will include: • Existing Saks locations: Fifth Avenue Flagship, New York City; Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania; Bal Harbour, Florida; Boca Raton, Florida; Chevy Chase, Maryland; McLean, Virginia; Huntington Station, New York; San Antonio; St. Louis; and Troy, Michigan. • New Saks locations: Houston; Las Vegas; Miami (Brickell City Center); and Toronto (Sherway Gardens, Eaton Center). Barrett, whose first salon was estab- lished in Bergdorf Goodman 19 years ago, states, "Together we can reimagine the department-store luxury salon experience and elevate it to an entirely new level." ■
