86 July 2014 | beautystorebusiness.com We will mail the journals after the event, so it will have pictures of the peo- ple attending and enjoying each aspect of the gala. Beauty Store Business [and Beauty Launchpad, NAILPRO and DAYSPA of Creative Age Publications] as well as Modern Salon [and Vance Publishing] will be providing industry research that will be exclusive to the journal and add value for our attendees. In addition to the hard copies being mailed, we will be sending them out electronically and posting them on many media websites to increase viewership. The journal will now reach thousands of additional industry professionals to ensure that advertising dollars are well spent. Why is the City of Hope important to you? The City of Hope has been the beauty industry's charity of choice for more than 30 years now. I have always been supportive of this worthy charity. However, when my daughter fell in love with Chris—my son-in-law—and got married, my pas- sion ignited because he is a Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor. He was diagnosed with cancer at 14 years old. And if it had not been for research centers such as the City of Hope, he may not be alive today. Chris had to endure chemotherapy and lost all his hair, but he was success- fully treated and is now cancer free. My daughter and son-in-law just had their first child—a boy named Carter— and I am a proud grandfather today. Not until cancer affects someone close to us do we realize what a valuable resource and institution the City of Hope is. How can those in the beauty industry get involved with the City of Hope? The City of Hope offers grassroots-efforts opportunities so that manufacturers, distributors, beauty stores and salons can get involved. [Director of philanthropy, National Professional Salon Industry] Kathleen P. Talbot from the City of Hope can answer individual questions; she can be reached at 213.241.7192, kptalbot@coh.org. I would encourage all who are interested to reach out to Kathleen because every dollar counts. And we never know which part of our efforts will put us over the top in winning the battle against cancer. What is your involvement with the Professional Beauty Association, which co-produces Cosmoprof North America every July? I have been a board member of [PBA's predecessor, the] Beauty & Barber Supply Institute and now the PBA (probeauty. org) for more than 25 years, and have enjoyed every minute of it. We have a great group of dedicated and talented board members. To have a vibrant industry, we must have a strong trade association. PBA is not an exclusive club, but an inclusive organization that needs the input and support of its constituents. I would urge everyone in the industry to participate by getting involved on committees. The PBA is accomplishing great things.
