82 July 2014 | beautystorebusiness.com The Kirschner Group's CEO will be honored with the industry's City of Hope Spirit of Life Award July 12. by Tracy Morin SATURDAY, JULY 12, IS THE DATE FOR THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY'S 2014 Spirit of Life Award Reception & Dinner at the Manadalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. This year Harlan Kirschner, CEO of The Kirschner Group, is being honored. Kirschner is only the second manufacturers rep firm principal to ever receive the award. (The previous manufacturers rep firm principal honoree serviced only one beauty retailer.) Today, The Kirschner Group services the Northeast, Midwest, Southwest and Southeast from its Deephaven, Minnesota, office, and TKG's West Coast and international business are managed from its Valencia, California, headquarters. Kirschner has been on the industry's City of Hope committee—which arranges the annual award dinner and generates funds for the City of Hope— for many years. Now, it's his turn—along with the evening's entertainment by legendary superstar Michael Bolton (four GRAMMY Award nominations, two GRAMMY Awards, eight studio albums rank in the Top 10, nine No. 1 singles)! Not many industry people know that Kirschner's goal "as a youngster was to attend medical school." He received a college degree as a respiratory therapist, and worked at a Los Angeles hospital for a number of years. This past year his Celebrating Cures campaign educated salon professionals and others in the industry about the lifesaving research at the City of Hope—and offered an opportunity for everyone to get involved. The campaign is raising funds through the gala, a tribute journal, a silent auction featuring one-of-a-kind items during the cocktail party and individuals giving back in their own communities through the online personal fund-raising platform. There's a special opportunity drawing to win a 2014 MINI Cooper Coupe for a suggested donation of $100 per ticket as well. The winner will be drawn at the gala July 12, and the winner doesn't need to be present to win.
