60 March 2014 | beautystorebusiness.com News KIRSCHNER TO RECEIVE TOP INDUSTRY HONOR FROM THE CITY OF HOPE City of Hope's National Professional Salon Industry will honor The Kirschner Group's Harlan Kirschner with its 2014 Spirit of Life Award July 12 at the Manda- lay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas. Kirschner is the second manufacturers rep firm prin- cipal to ever receive the award—and the only one that has a rep firm that services more than one national beauty retailer. The annual award is the City of Hope's most prestigious philanthropic honor, presented annually to an industry leader who has demonstrated outstanding busi- ness and altruistic achievement. City of Hope is a leading research, treatment and education center for cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. This year's event, titled "Celebrating Cures," will celebrate the hope of a cure for cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The event—one of the industry's best networking evenings—will include a hosted cocktail reception, a sit-down dinner and entertainment. For information about becoming a sponsor, purchasing tickets or to make a donation, visit cityofhope. org/salon/sol or contact City of Hope's Kathleen P. Talbot, 800.272.2310, kptalbot@coh.org. "One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime," says Kirschner. "Odds are someone you know or love will be affected by cancer. Don't you want to be a part of finding their cure? City of Hope's marvelous commitment to find a cure for cancer is deserving of the enthusiastic support of our entire beauty community. It is an honor to receive the Spirit of Life Award and be recognized by my peers in the beauty industry." A group of 50 beauty professionals—including Creative Age Publications publisher/CEO Deborah Carver and Beauty Store Business executive editor Marc Birenbaum—joined Kirschner at the City of Hope in the Los Angeles area Jan. 24, where they toured the campus. Highlights throughout the day included seeing the Positive Image Center, where patients of all ages learn to minimize the cosmetic side effects of illness or medical treatment with cost-free services and programs tailored to meet their needs. At lunch, Robert Stone, the new president and CEO of City of Hope, spoke to the group, sharing his own personal story of his uncle battling cancer and how the compassionate patient-centered care makes City of Hope stand out from any other organization. The day ended with a special guest speaker, patient Hannah Komai (pictured above with, from left, Talbot, Carver and George Schaeffer), who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma—a cancer of the bone—three years ago. Now 23 and in remission, she is studying to be a pediatric oncology nurse. Kirschner is CEO of The Kirschner Group, a global sales organization in the professional-beauty industry. The company started with a few small lines servicing the West Coast territory, and has grown to acquire top-performing sales agencies throughout the United States—becoming the first organization to offer nationwide coverage to manufacturers. In 2004, The Kirschner Group expanded internationally, servicing Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Kirschner currently serves as president of City of Hope's National Professional Salon Industry Council, a position he assumed in January 2013. He is also a board director for the Professional Beauty Association, chairman of the PBA's Manufacturer Leadership Council and treasurer of the Western Buying Conference the past 16 years. "We are privileged to honor Harlan Kirschner, whose extraordinary vision and innovation have transformed the beauty industry," states Talbot. "It is fitting that he receives the Spirit of Life Award, which recognizes an honoree's outstanding leadership and contributions to the community and his profession." CLAIROL PRO CONTINUES TO PARTNER WITH WRIGHT Clairol Professional has announced Kiyah Wright as the brand's official celebrity colorist. "I feel right at home with Clairol Professional, and I am excited to continue to be a part of a household brand," says Wright. "I look forward to creating, inspiring and achieving greatness with Clairol Professional once again." Look for Wright in a new reality series "Crazy.Sexy.Life." on OWN (the Oprah Winfrey Network) this spring. ANDIS DEBUTS ITS AMERICAN LEGACY COLLECTION WITH VIDEO TUTORIALS Andis has released its first styling series—the American Legacy Collection—featuring looks that can be achieved with the company's clippers and trimmers while highlighting six hair makeovers of people who actually work at the company. Andis educators Kenny Duncan and Jason Potchen created the Classic Taper on Anel from machine shop; a Crop and Pixie on Shirley and Jenny, both from assembly; a Classic Side Part on John from shipping; the Fauxhawk on social-media expert Travis; and the South of France on Riko from machine shop. "We wanted to use Andis associates for the American Legacy Collection because they're integral to the Andis heritage and craftsmanship that's recognized worldwide by generations of barbers and stylists," says Karen Formico, vice president of marketing. "In addition, they represent the real people who walk into salons and barbershops day in and day out. As a company, Andis has always believed in inspiring others to excel—whether they're holding our tools, making our tools or receiving a new style from our tools. Helping to build their legacy is at the heart of our mission." Video tutorials on each style walk beauty professionals through the various steps in great detail. "Many stylists didn't receive adequate training using clippers, so they don't realize how effective they can be in creating the latest styles— especially those that require tight fades and tapers," states Duncan. "That's where the tutorials are so effective. We want to give stylists the education that they need to master the cuts using the tools that are most effective at delivering these styles." Andis plans to release its second collection of six hairstyles this summer.
