I N S I D E T H E International Program Get a behind-the-scenes look at how one organization is helping beauty companies grow their businesses outside the United States. THE UNITED STATES HAS BEEN STEADILY INCREASING ITS EXPORT of toiletries and cosmetics to foreign nations since 2003, according to United States Census Bureau records. In 2012, toiletry and cosmetic exports equaled close to $11 billion. In fact, U.S. exports hit an all-time high in 2012 due in part to the National Export Initiative introduced through the International Trade Administration in 2010. Two years ago, the Center for International Trade Development, hosted by Long Beach Community College in Long Beach, California, received a grant to begin an international trade mission program under the direction of CITD program director Cesar Arellanes, an international trade and export promotion expert. More than $22 million was raised in export sales through the program, which introduced 55 California companies to international sales through trade missions. (Notably, California's health and beauty industry consists of approximately 600 companies, made up of a large number of small-to-medium enterprises, which produce more than 1,500 cosmetic and toiletry brands and employ 287,750 people in California, according to the CITD. Furthermore, California boasts the highest percentage of cosmetic and beauty supply sales in the country, according to the United States Census Bureau.) 66 January 2014 | beautystorebusiness.com Images courtesy of the Center for International Trade Development-Long Beach Community College by Liz Barrett
