Beauty Culture It turns out that more than half of American women (56%) really aren't using coupons and discount codes, according to the results of a poll from ShopSmart magazine of Consumer Reports as reported in its June issue. The report highlights money-saving tips, trends and places to shop for beauty bargains. The findings present four ways that consumers can save on beauty products: 1. Buy store brands. A recent beauty-product price scan found that store brands can save shoppers as much as 40% on products such as facial cleansers, scrubs, moisturizers and eye serums. Many of the retailers offer at least two tiers of their brand, which competes on price and a premium line. 2. Buy high-end look-alikes. These "equivalents" compete with higher-end name brands with comparable ingredients. They might be more expensive than mass brands, but in most cases are cheaper than premium brands. 3. Buy celebrity lines. Many retailers are now selling exclusive celebrity lines. These lines generally retail for less than premium brands, some for as low as $10 or less. 4. Buy bulk. Warehouse stores and their websites often offer high-end beauty goods that compete with name brands—featuring the same ingredients with lower price tags. Additional highlights from the report, which surveyed more than 1,000 women nationally, include: • When they shop: 43% bought cosmetics only when they were on sale • Beauty hoarders: 61% had beauty products that were expired or that they no longer used • Buyer's remorse: 33% regretted a beauty purchase made in the previous 12 months • Spend vs. save: Foundation—including tinted moisturizers and BB creams—was the No. 1 item women splurged on; lip gloss was the item they scrimped on • Favorite makeup product: Mascara was the cosmetic product they used the most • Brand loyalty: Facial moisturizer was the No. 1 item they were most brand loyal to; lip gloss was the least Other notables: • Facial moisturizers and cleansers were two of the three top products women were most brand loyal to • More than half of women in the survey spent more than $20 on a single beauty item; 14% spent more than $50 • ShopSmart secret shoppers found that store-brand deals could save shoppers as much as 40% • ShopSmart secret shoppers found that an online retailer could save shoppers as much as 20% less than chain drugstores, but with less store-brand equivalents and the potential for shipping charges 104 August 2013 | beautystorebusiness.com 15 Ways to Make Your Employees Happy "Happiness increases our levels of dopamine, which produces our learning abilities. It helps us learn better and more efficiently," says Diane Lang, psychotherapist, author and positive-living speaker. She offers 15 ways to make employees happy: 1. Recognize even small accomplishments with praise and appreciation. 2. Don't wait for reviews/evaluation to praise them. 3. Pay attention to their small accomplishments. 4. Give compliments, particularly as you witness their hard work. 5. You can't overuse the phrases "Thank you" and "I appreciate your hard work." 6. Know your co-workers by name. 7. Be involved. Say hello. Ask them about their weekends, family, etc. 8. The more fun and social the place, the happier the employees. 9. Micromanaging employees lowers their motivation, their mental health and the overall morale of the department—so don't do it. 10. Motivate employees with a paid day off or offer a more flexible schedule. 11. Support employees' wellness: A.) Set up an outside area to eat and walk so they can get their vitamin D and dose of fresh air/nature; B.) Have a workout center or forge a deal with a gym, providing employees a discount; C.) Have company activities that include socialization and exercise: walk/run for charity, outside picnics and barbecues with outside activities such as volleyball and a Frisbee disc; D.) Offer workshops on well-being. 12. Provide a healthy environment, including good lighting, plenty of natural sunlight, a water cooler, plants, etc. 13. Allow small breaks where workers can get up, stretch and be refreshed, helping improve creativity and productivity. 14. Encourage vacations, allowing workers to return to work happier, refreshed and motivated. 15. Have weekly meetings simply to share good news. Lang, who offers employee workshops through dlcounseling.com, concludes, "Remember moods and emotions are contagious so be the happy boss! You're the role model and mentor. How you act is contagious. Encourage simple things such as saying hello as well as smiles and lunch breaks." ■ Do you have culturally relevant information that our readers ought to know?
