diseases, such as diabetes, which we in the salon industry can tap into to share with our clients and customers. Hairdressers have at least 30 minutes with clients in their chairs. They inevitably end up having intimate conversations. The City of Hope provides us with a lot of information as an industry that we can share—such as contacts, referrals, treatment, trials, etc. We haven't talked about that enough. We want to take all of that and create a campaign through message sharing and awareness on an ongoing basis. What kind of surprises can we look forward to at this year's dinner? "The City of Hope has incredible resources, which we in the salon industry can share with our clients and customers." What's New at Clairol Professional? This year's City of Hope Spirit of Life Award recipient, Reuben Carranza—CEO of Wella, the Salon Professional Division of P&G;, North America—fills you in on one of the freshest offerings coming out of his company, specifically Clairol Professional. The new Clairol Professional Care & Styling collections follow through on the brand's desire to offer its customers—both consumers and professionals—support that complements its color products, says Carranza. It contains Radialux technology, which targets areas that need extra care. "We are continuing to add SKUs beyond the existing shampoo, conditioner and styling products to expand the line's portfolio," adds Carranza. "In addition, we have some great stylists who are doing a great job at getting the Clairol name in front of consumers in magazines and on the red carpet. It's always exciting to see the Clairol brand in the consumer magazines." We can't reveal much yet since things haven't been finalized, but we're looking at some high-profile celebrities at the dinner—potentially as emcees and with further involvement in the campaign after the July event. For what reason do you hope you are being honored this year? I've been with Procter & Gamble for 23 years and have been involved with the City of Hope for a long time. I've always been impressed by what the City of Hope does, and I hope that part of the reason I was chosen for this honor was because people know that I don't do anything halfway. I believe that we always have to do something more. We're campaigning on top of our day jobs, but it's heartwarming work. What inspires you to go to your day job every day? I love working with people in an industry where we can make a difference in the lives of others on a daily basis. I get to do that with my team at Wella; our partners in the salons and stores get to make a difference with their clients and customers. It's a tremendous privilege, and I'm grateful every day. ■ Liz Barrett is an Oxford, MS-based writer and editor. 56 June 2013 | beautystorebusiness.com Products image courtesy of Wella, the Salon Professional Division of P&G; photo by Fred Lee Nearly 40 members of the professional salon industry joined Carranza and Dr. Riggs in a tour of the City of Hope campus in California last January.
