We're still in the early stages, but five organizations have purchased sponsorship packages so far. As we speak (in early April), it's still early, but we've already received commitments for 23 tables. How can salon professionals help with awareness and fund-raising? "With a 12-month campaign, everyone—including salons, retailers and beauty schools—can participate and help to spread awareness." In November, Wella will offer a special turquoise haircolor shade to promote diabetes awareness, and several other manufacturers have shown interest in introducing blue products as well. We're hoping that beauty retailers will create a special section for the products, similar to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Why did you choose to run the campaign through November instead of ending it at the July Spirit of Life Award dinner? A lot of activities culminate at the dinner, but I thought that we needed to move toward a campaign that went 12 months. We've thrown a great party, but we've never really invited everyone on the block to attend. With a 12-month campaign, everyone—including salons, retailers and beauty schools—can participate and help to spread awareness. What is your fund-raising goal and plan for reaching it? Our goal is to reach $1.5 million at the dinner in July. We'll be working with proven fund-raising methods, such as sponsorships and tickets to the dinner, salon-inspired fund-raising events and open donations. As we are starting to reach out, I've already been struck by how many people are affected by diabetes and how many more have creative fund-raising ideas. 54 June 2013 | beautystorebusiness.com What types of items will be available in the online auction? We're looking at experiential packages such as backstage passes to shows, items donated by fashion designers, etc. There's been a lot of interest in donating items for the auction. Has anyone come forward with monetary donations yet? How Beauty Stores Can Get Involved Reuben Carranza, CEO of Wella, the Salon Professional Division of P&G;, North America—and this year's City of Hope Spirit of Life Award recipient—offers a few tips on how retailers can participate in this year's Hope Is In Style campaign honoring the City of Hope's efforts in diabetes research. Carranza says that participation in Hope Is In Style may begin with helping employees and customers affected by diabetes find information at Cityofhope.org/hopeisinstyle. People may also contribute to this year's campaign in the following ways: • Make a personal donation through the website. • Get the word out in the retail environment through email lists, special events, fund-raisers, etc. All the tools needed are available on the site. • Attend the City of Hope Spirit of Life gala reception and dinner on Saturday, July 13, just before Cosmoprof North America 2013, and enjoy lots of fun, great music and surprises. • Help support the campaign in November during Diabetes Awareness Month. Creative ideas on how to achieve this are welcome. Friedman (right), the City of Hope CEO. Not everyone understands the City of Hope, and salon professionals can help to change this. The City of Hope is one of the most unique entities working on research, treatment and cures. It goes from bench to bedside. When a City of Hope doctor learns about a particularly promising piece of research, he can quickly move it into testing, which enables the City of Hope to bring solutions to patients in a fraction of the time that traditional clinical trials can. The City of Hope's National Professional Salon Industry effort has worked in our industry for more than 25 years, and all members of our industry—including beauty store owners and employees— can take advantage of the City of Hope as a resource. Whether you or a family member has been diagnosed, you can get a consultation, information on the latest clinical trials, support and care; it's all available to you. Plus, the City of Hope has incredible resources surrounding its work in fighting
